Do I REALLY need digital marketing skills to be successful as a content writer? Aren’t they meant for the marketing personnel?
That’s what each of us believes as a freelance writer. A freelance writer ONLY needs good writing and communication skills. Where do digital marketing skills come in?
I had the same notion until something changed my mind.

Why I Worked on my Digital Marketing Skills?
The reason was FAILURE!
My previous blog failed. Failed to convert the readers into my customers. The clients whom I wrote for stopped giving me assignments after a few months. I had no work in my hand and was completely devastated.
There’s a famous saying: Moments of deep realisation always happen in moments of adversity.
Same happened with me. I realised that my written posts didn’t move the readers. It didn’t motivate them to take the desired action. So all my posts turned out to be actually ZERO.
Sounds like your story?
Are you still struggling to satisfy your clients with your content? OR Still not attracting the right clients?
The answer lies in the CONTENT itself.
Bring yourself in the shoes of your reader and read your own content. Does it make an impact you ought to? Does it connect you and your reader on an emotional plane?
Let me know in the comments.
Moving on, I know I haven’t still answered the question: Where do digital marketing skills come in content writing?
Stay on as I reveal the answer.
Note: Anywhere at any place in the post, if you don’t agree with my argument, you are free to leave. But mind you, nobody else will tell you what you’ll learn today about digital marketing skills.
Ready? Let’s start.
First, know….
What is Digital Marketing?
As the definition goes,
Digital marketing is the marketing of products and services through digital channels like social media, search engines, blogs, online ads, affiliate marketing, emails, and mobile applications.
Digital marketing is advertising the products and services of a brand through various digital channels.
But what’s the connection with content writing?
The connection is very mutual. Just weaving your thoughts into words and serving them to your clients can’t be labelled as content writing.
Clients want business from the content you write. That’s what they hire you for. And if it doesn’t give them any business, you are not worth their time and money.
That’s where digital marketing skills come into play. They help you layout your content in a way that attracts and keeps the customers for any business.
This is the difference between a good and a bad content, which is detailed below.
Five Elements of High-quality Business Content
It should move your audience
Ever read an article that seems difficult to forget?
That’s because the article roused an emotion in you which is easily relatable.
Words and sentences are forgotten, but you can’t forget the emotion you experienced in reading those words.
Aim to create such an emotional response in the audience with your content. Use fiction, poetry, stories, etc. to move your audience.
It must gain their attention
The attention span of a reader in this digital world is short-lived. You won’t get it unless you earn it through your sincere efforts. You have to earn it every day and with all the content.
More the time your reader spends on your content, or the more the number of shares it receives, higher the quality of your content.
It should have a spark
As a professional writer, you are the voice of the business you serve, their beliefs, passions, vision, etc. And this should reflect in the content you write. Only then you can make the customers have an interest in their business.
It should have a proven structure
Getting creative with your content doesn’t mean leaving out the technicalities. It ought to have a proper structure which includes:
- An eye-catching headline
- A few sharp and focused introductory sentences that hook the reader to your content.
- Valuable and relevant information that solves the problem of your audience.
- The key takeaway message for the reader.
- Stories, metaphors, case studies, examples, and other techniques to engage your audience.
- A powerful call-to-action that tells the audience about the next step to take.
It should convey to people how to think of your business
You are not the only one writing for a business/brand. There are several writers writing content for your competitor’s business. So, how will you make yours stand out?
The answer lies in brand storytelling.
What do you want your readers to take away from your content? How do you want them to think about the brand you write for?
Answer these questions and you’ll have a perfect content to sum up.
How Do Digital Marketing Skills Help in Writing Quality Content?
After reading so far, you can conclude that writing a quality content needs two things:
- Understanding the audience you write for
- The value/solution your business can provide them
However, joining these two dots requires an entrepreneurial mindset, which only digital marketing skills can give.
Business and brands only know their vision and ROI. It’s you, the writer, who can voice their opinion in the market and provide value to their services through his words.
Learning digital marketing skills will help you:
- To understand your audience well
- Find your audience at the right platforms to connect with them
- To understand the needs of the brand you write for
- To connect the dots and tell the brand story
- To keep the audience and make them come back
Though the serious question remains…
